Scat Pro Stock Nationals

This event was held at the IDRC Longhorn Nationals, in San Antonio, Texas, on 11/02.

It was a seminal event in the history of aircooled VW drag racing, because it marked the first time in recent memory that there has been a national event with a significant payout. Pre-race rumours had the payout, plus contingency, at over $5,100 for the pro stock class. Of course, you can't have an event like this without sponsorship. In this case, it was the IDRC, and Scat, an established manufacturer of cranks and other automotive parts.

Some of you might be wondering about the pro stock class, since there is nothing like it in the sport compact drag racing world. To sum it up, this class is the ultimate in all-motor competition, but it's handled a lot differently than any of the all-motor classes that import racers are familiar with. Instead of a size limit on the engine, for example, the pro stock class rules dictate a 9 pounds-per-cubic inch restriction. Another big difference is that there is no pan or unibody construction, these are strictly tube chassis vehicles. On the other hand, however, the class is currently limited to old-skool carburetors; no fuel injection is allowed.

This event brought out a car from the east coast, and a car from the west coast, but most of the participants were from the Texas Pro Racing Association circuit. Their pro stock rules are similar to the Pro Racing Association circuit in California, but they only run pro stock, while the California PRA runs several other classes in addition to pro stock. However, the Texas PRA has been far more active lately in their pro stock class, compared to the pro stock class in the western U.S.

Seven cars survived qualifying, and went on into the elimination rounds. In the final round, it was Damon Harmon vs. Shawn Geers, with Shawn taking home the trophy. You can get the DVD of this race here: Scat Pro Stock Nationals coverage on VW Speed Scene #3.
